A college teacher was brutally beaten to death in Khagrachhari, leading to violent clashes between two groups. To control the situation, the district administration has imposed an indefinite Section 144 in the district.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at Khagrachari Technical School and College. Khagrachhari Deputy Commissioner Md Shahiduzzaman confirmed the imposition of Section 144.
The deceased teacher, identified as Abul Hasnat Muhammad Sohel Rana, was the chief instructor in the Building Construction and Safety Department at the district’s Technical School and College.
According to reports, Sohel Rana had previously faced accusations of sexually harassing a student, and a case had been filed against him. After being cleared of the charges and returning to work, indigenous students had been demanding his removal.
On Tuesday, the situation escalated when these students confined Rana to the principal's office, accusing him of attempting to rape a female student. They then brutally beat him, resulting in his death.
A video circulating on social media shows around 15-20 indigenous teenagers and youths attacking the teacher indiscriminately. The police rescued him and took him to Khagrachhari District Modern Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the news of the teacher's death, clashes erupted between indigenous and Bengali communities in Khagrachhari town. Miscreants set fire to a motorcycle and vandalised property, including several rooms and furniture at the Technical School and College.
