A 17-year-old boy has been stabbed to death while chasing members of a ‘teen gang’ attempting to steal bicycles in Dhaka’s Hazaribagh.
The victim, Shahadat Hossain Akbar Shanto, lived in Hazaribagh Lane. His father Afzal Hossain works at a shop in Elephant Road.
Shanto was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after the incident on Thursday night, said Inspector Md Faruk, chief of DMCH Police Camp.
“He died around 10:30am on Friday under hospital care.”
A group of five to six members of a local teen gang went to steal bicycles at Hazaribagh Park area when locals confronted them, said Shanto’s father Afzal. Shanto also joined residents in chasing the thieves.
“During the chase, the teenagers stabbed Shanto in the left side of his chest and fled, leaving him on the street,” Afzal said. “I rushed to the scene and found my son covered in blood. I then took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 12:30am.”
No arrests have been made yet but the assailants have been identified, according to Hazaribagh Police Station chief Muhammad Saiful Islam.
“We’ll get them soon,” he said.
