River Police have recovered the bodies of three of four people who went missing after a cargo carrier collided with a speedboat in Barishal's Kirtankhola River. One of them was the driver of the speedboat.
The three bodies were recovered between 7am to 10:30am on Sunday from the river, said Sub-Inspector Md Omar Faruk of the Barishal Central River Police Station. One person remains missing.
"One body surfaced near the accident site at Janatar Haat adjacent to the entry point of the Laharhaat Canal of the river. While recovering that body, another surfaced. After those two bodies were sent to the morgue, the third one was found floating," SI Faruk said.
The dead were identified as Md Alamin, 18, from Bheduroa Uttar Char in Bhola Sadar, Md Imran Hossain Emon, 29, from Dhani in Bhola Sadar and Russel Amin, 25, from Noapara in Patuakhali's Kalapara. Alamin was the speedboat driver.
Sajal Das, 30, the missing person, is a native of Rahmatpur in Barishal's Babuganj.
Earlier on Thursday, the cargo carrier collided with the speedboat. Later, the body of a passenger called Jalis Mahmud, 50, was recovered. Initially, four people were reported to be missing, according to the police.
Constable Mansur Ahmed of Daulatkhan Police Station was also injured in the accident. He was admitted to the Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College in critical condition.
All three bodies were sent to the morgue at Barishal’s Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, said Faruk. "The bodies will be sent to the families after an autopsy," he said.
Meanwhile, SI Faruk filed a case with the Barishal Kotwali Model Police Station naming speedboat driver Alamin and cargo carrier captain Khalek Majhi as suspects. Three other unidentified suspects were also accused in the case.
The cargo carrier captain is currently in jail, said the police officer.
