Three members of a family have been burnt in an explosion caused by a gas cylinder leak in Chandpur’s Kachua Upazila.

The incident occurred around 4am on Wednesday at a house in Hossainpur village, said Kachua South Union Administrative Officer (Additional Duty) Md Nasir Hossain, bdnews24.com reports,

The injured are Khadija Akhter, 30, her husband Md Mahmudul, 36, and Khadija’s sister-in-law Sheuli Akhter, 40.

All three are undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.

Mahmudul’s younger brother Hasan said Khadija had gone to the kitchen to prepare sehri when the explosion occurred.

“There was already a gas leak in the cylinder. When she tried to light the stove, it exploded,” he said.

Mahmudul and Sheuli were burnt while trying to rescue her, Hasan added.

They were first taken to Kachua Upazila Health Complex, where they received primary treatment before being sent to Dhaka by ambulance.

Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, resident physician at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said the three were brought in around 8:30am.

“Khadija has suffered burns to 35 percent of her body and has been admitted. Mahmudul has 4 percent burns and

Sheuli has 2 percent burns. The latter two are under observation in the emergency department,” he said.
