Three members of a family have been killed after an ambulance collided head-on with a truck in Faridpur.
Two others were injured in the accident that occurred around 7:30 am on Saturday in the Munsurabad area on the Bhanga–Khulna highway, according to Bhanga Highway Police Station chief (OC) Helal Uddin.
The dead were identified as Rukaiya Akhtar Neela, 32, her husband Mizanur Rahman, 40, and her brother Sakibur Rahman Nishan, 27, all natives of Jashore, bdnews24.com reports.
The ambulance driver Krishna Das, 55, was critically injured. Another passenger travelling in the ambulance was also seriously hurt, though police said their identity had not yet been confirmed.
Citing local residents, police said Mizanur had recently suffered a stroke and was being taken by ambulance from Jashore to Dhaka for advanced treatment when the collision occurred. The ambulance hit a Khulna-bound truck coming from the opposite direction.
Police, local authorities and a Fire Service team went to the scene and took the injured to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared three people dead. The injured were later transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
Traffic on the highway was disrupted for a short time following the crash but has since returned to normal, said OC Helal. Legal proceedings are under way in connection with the incident.
