The Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB) on Tuesday condemned the government for forming a committee on road safety with the former shipping minister Shajahan Khan as its chief.

TIB expressed the concern in a statement saying that the committee is ‘questionable’ as its members played ‘controversial and biased’ role in overseeing the road safety.

TIB urged the government to reform the committee with the experts in the sector.

The government recently formed a 15-member committee in a bid to provide recommendations on curbing road accidents and bringing discipline in the transport sector.

“It is impossible to expect committee members playing neutral roles when discharging their responsibilities,” said Dr Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of the TIB, in a statement.

Earlier, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader announced the development of the committee emerging from a meeting of the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) at Bangladesh Road Transport Authority office (BRTA) office in the capital.
