Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed concern about the vandalism in Dhanmondi 32 and several parts of the country in the past two days.

TIB issued the statement on Friday in response to various acts of vandalism allegedly instigated by former deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from neighbouring India.

Protesters vandalised the former family home of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, along with the residences of other members of her party.

The unrest erupted following reports that Hasina, who has been in exile in India since being removed from power by student-led protests last year, was set to address the nation via social media.

TIB criticised the government's passive response in the statement, stating that merely issuing statements is inadequate.

The organisation emphasised that the current situation poses a serious threat to democratic transition, good governance, and national stability, and urged the authorities to take concrete and effective action to control and prevent further unrest.

Calling for respect for the rule of law and an end to destructive activities, TIB's Executive Director, Iftekharuzzaman, said, "It is undeniable that under an authoritarian regime driven by nepotism and unrestrained greed for power, the most irreversible damage has been inflicted upon Bangabandhu, the Liberation War, and its ideals.

The public's outrage has intensified manifold due to the shameless and conspiratorial propaganda of fugitive Sheikh Hasina and her domestic and international allies.

"However, he added, "Retaliatory violence and vandalism across the country, instead of lawful responses, are unacceptable. Such actions will not send a positive message about a stable Bangladesh in the post-July transition period."

The organisation expressed hope that all relevant stakeholders would demonstrate patience and tolerance in addressing the current crisis.
