A daylight robbery happened on Saturday when a group of muggers impersonated members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and looted Tk 18 million (Tk 1.8 crore) from employees of a distributor of the mobile financial service Nagad in the capital's Uttara area.

According to police and witness accounts, Abdul Khalek Noyon, a Nagad distributor residing at a flat on Road 12, Uttara Sector 13, sent four employees to their nearby distribution office around 9:00am on the day.

Riding two motorcycles, they were carrying bags containing Tk 18 million (Tk 1.8 crore) in cash meant for depositing with a bank.

A black microbus intercepted them when they entered Road No. 13 in the area (Uttara).

Three to four men dressed in RAB jackets emerged from the vehicle, chased the motorcyclists and forcibly dragged three employees onto the microbus along with the cash bags.

One employee managed to escape. The CCTV footage obtained from the scene shows the microbus blocking the motorcycles and the assailants in RAB uniforms apprehending the victims.

The assailants later released the employees in Uttara's Sector 17 and fled with the money.

"I personally visited the scene shortly after the robbery," Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Uttara Division, Md Mohidul Islam, told the media.

"We've collected CCTV footage and are analysing it to identify the perpetrators," he said.

He said that the police had taken the case seriously.

He said that an investigation was underway to track down the culprits and recover the stolen funds.

He said that police were also examining whether the heist involved insider information, given its precision and timing.
