Top leaders of 11 active political student organisations of Dhaka University (DU) held a meeting with the administration at the Vice-Chancellor’s Lounge on Saturday.  During the meeting, the leaders from each student organisation demanded the election of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU).

DU Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy Shahos and General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon; Islami Chhatra Andolan President Yachin Arafat; Revolution Student Alliance President Nuzia Hasin Rasha and General Secretary Sami Abdullah; Convener of Students Federation Armanul Haque; General Secretary of Students Union Mayeen Ahmed; Samajtantrik Chhatra Front (Marxist) President Sadekul Islam Sadiq, among others, participated in the meeting.

The Vice-Chancellor, Pro- Vice-Chancellors, Treasurer and Proctor of the university were present in the meeting.

After the meeting, Chhatra Dal’s Shipon said that the main task is to restart the academic activities of Dhaka University. He mentioned that the university administration had called them primarily to discuss this matter and sought their full cooperation.

Regarding student politics, Shipon said, “We have demanded fair politics on campus. In fact, no decision was made about student politics during the last Thursday’s meeting; it was simply a discussion. A few Awami League friends present in the meeting misguided journalists with wrong information. Otherwise the university would have published an official notification in this regard. We demand the disbandment of the University Syndicate Committee, which is composed of fascist henchmen.”

Islami Chhatrashibir President Sadiq Kayem said, “We have told the administration that stopping student politics is not a wise decision. Student politics should be developed in the light of the expectations of a mass uprising. Tyranny has been going on in the name of student politics for the past 15 years. We want an end to it. We want politics based on merit and politics of students’ rights.”

Sajidul Islam, council convener of the Democratic Student Council, said they discussed various limitations of the DUCSU election, the 30th Ordinance. “Fair politics is needed on campus. Stopping politics is not the right decision. During the discussion, we demanded to bring to justice those who were involved in attacks and various conspiracies during the agitation and to provide security for student politics on the campus.”

Regarding Chhatrashibir’s participation in the discussion, Sajidul Islam said, “I don’t know how a banned student organisation took part in a university meeting. They should clarify their position on 1971.”

Armanul Haque, convener of the Dhaka University chapter of Students Federation, remarked that there has been no politics on campus until now. What is there is only a culture of oppression and imposition.

“That Chhatra League politics cannot be considered student politics. Student politics is an important issue for fair social development. We have demanded that the university administration restore the normal atmosphere on campus by holding DUCSU  elections soon.
