A group of unidentified assailants shot a money exchange businessman and robbed local and foreign currencies worth over Tk 2.0 million (Tk 22 lakh) from him in broad daylight in the capital's Mirpur area on Tuesday morning.
Victim Jahidul Islam (55), owner of Mahmud Money Exchange, suffered serious injuries.
He was admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, according to Mirpur Model Police Station.
Jahidul was on his way to his office in Mirpur 10 from his residence in Section 6, carrying local and foreign currencies amounting to over Tk 2.0 million (Tk 22 lakh).
A police official at Mirpur Model Police Station said the when he (Jahidul) reached Abdul Baten Road around 10:00 am, six unidentified men riding two motorcycles intercepted him.
They demanded the money and, when he refused, one of them shot him in his waist on the left side.
The attackers fled the scene with the money.
Locals rushed Jahidul to a nearby hospital, from where he was transferred to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Members of the police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) visited the scene.
Law enforcement officials are reviewing CCTV footage to identify and apprehend the culprits.
