A group of miscreants attacked a human chain organised by traders against extortion at Karwan Bazar in the capital on Monday, triggering clashes and a brief chase between the two sides.

Following the attack, traders staged a protest with sticks in front of the Kitchen Market, while police and army personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

The incident occurred around 11:15 am on Monday (December 29) in front of the Karwan Bazar Kitchen Market, Tejgaon Police Station Inspector (Operations) Abdul Hannan confirmed.

Witnesses said attackers fled when traders gathered with sticks in front of the market. Traders then continued their protest at the spot, creating tension in the area for some time.

The traders alleged that Abdul Rahman, an expelled leader of Jubo Dal, has been extorting money from Karwan Bazar traders since August 5. They claimed his associates attacked the human chain with sticks when traders protested against the alleged extortion. Market traders later chased the attackers away.

The traders further alleged that the attack took place in the presence of police. They warned that if Abdul Rahman is not arrested within 24 hours, they will shut down shops and take to the streets. A protest procession was later held.

Inspector Abdul Hannan said traders were holding a peaceful human chain against a person named Abdul Rahman, as they had done previously. Police were present nearby when several individuals suddenly tried to snatch their banners, leading to scuffles and subsequent chases. He said the situation is now under control.
