Roads and Highways Department (RHD) will resume traffic movement on the damaged bridge over the river Buriganga on limited scale Tuesday night.

Additional Chief Engineer of Dhaka Zone Mohammad Sabuj Uddin Khan told the FE that the team visited the spot on Tuesday morning and instructed to take some precautionary measures for reopening the traffic.

He said only light vehicles have been allowed to use two lanes of the four-lane bridge.

Sabuj Uddin Khan, however, said heavy transports have been directed to use second Buriganga bridge at Babubazar to get entry and out of the city.

While going to rescue the launch capsized at Buriganga on Monday morning, a salvage ship hit the girder of the bridge known as the first Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge at Postogola.

Soon after the accident occurred in the afternoon on Monday, the RHD officials rushed to the spot and suspended traffic movement on the side of the bridge’s girder damaged.

However, total traffic movement over the bridge stopped at 10 pm on Monday due to rush of heavy vehicles towards the bridge.

The rescue ship was going to Farashganj side from Narayanganj to rescue the ship that was capsized after being hit by another launch in Buriganga river.
