Bus owners and workers in Mymensingh have halted services on several routes, including those to Dhaka, in protest against vandalism and looting at the ticket counters at the Maskanda bus stand.

Passengers have been facing difficulties as the suspension of services has continued for around four hours.

Mymensingh Kotwali Police chief Md Shibirul Islam said a group of people attacked the counters at the Dhaka bus stand in the city on Tuesday.

Alamgir Mahmud Alam, president of the District Motor Owners Association, said that bus services had been suspended across greater Mymensingh, including the Dhaka-Mymensingh route as well as routes to Sherpur, Netrokona, Haluaghat, Dhobaura, Purbadhala, Kishoreganj and other areas, following the incident.

An employee of the Maskanda bus counter, who wished to remain unnamed, said a group of men on motorcycles attacked the counter with local weapons, vandalising the premises and looting money.

Eyewitnesses added that the ticket counter of the United Bus service was destroyed and shut down, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded despite having bought advance tickets.

Shibirul said efforts were underway to resolve the issue through discussions with leaders of the bus owners’ association.
