Law Minister Anisul Huq has assured that real culprits of the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi will be brought to trial.
The law minister gave the assurance while speaking to reporters at the Judicial Administration Training Institute after inaugurating a training programme for assistant judges and equivalent judicial officers there.
Earlier on February 1 this year, Anisul said that if the investigation were to need 50 years to find the killers of journalists Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, it would have to be given 50 years.
Sagar Sarowar, news editor of private TV station Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, senior reporter of another channel ATN Bangla, were killed at their rented flat in the capital’s West Rajabazar on February 11 in 2012.
The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), which is in charge of investigating the case, has so far taken 105 dates from the court to submit the investigation report.
When asked whether the charge of investigating the case would be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department or the Police Bureau of Investigation, as the Rab has failed to complete it for the last 12 years, the minister said, “The government will take appropriate steps needed for the trial of the case.
“If we feel that the investigating agency should be changed, we will change. The nature of the murder is tough for any agency to investigate. So I will say that we need to wait for a bit.”
On January 23, this year, a Dhaka court once again postponed the submission date for the investigation report of the journalist couple murder case. The Rab is now scheduled to submit it on February 27, which is the 105th extension granted to the elite force for this report submission.
