Former deputy speaker Shamsul Haque Tuku, former deputy minister of sport Arif Khan Joy, ex-chairman of Chittagong Port (retired) Rear Admiral Mohammed Sohail, Awami League Organising Secretary Ahmad Hossain and Dhaka University Chhatra League General Secretary Tanvir Khan Saikat have been remanded for three days in separate cases connected to violence surrounding the quota reform movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mainul Islam issued the orders around 7am on Sunday after hearing the petitions.
The suspects were brought to the court lock-up around 6am amid tight security.
Police Inspector Asaduzzaman read out the remand appeal, said court office assistant Toufiqul Islam. Legal counsels of the suspects appealed to scrap the remand orders and sought bail for them. The judge heard the case for 15 minutes and issued the orders.
Tuku, Joy, and Sohail were already remanded for seven days in the murder case of Ideal College student Khalid Hassan Saifullah.
On Sunday, investigation officer Akkas Mia, sub-inspector at Lalbagh Police Station sought a seven-day remand for them in the same case. Judge Mainul Islam granted a three day remand for them after hearing the appeal.
Meanwhile, Ahmad and Saikat were presented to the court on the same day after their remand in the murder case of Khalid Hasan Saifullah came to an end. The judge then ordered the suspects to be sent to jail.
Police, however, were granted three days to question Ahmad and Saikat in their custody on the killing of garment worker Rubel at Ring Road under the jurisdiction of Adabor Police Station.
Inspector Mintu Chandra Banik of Adabor Police Station, investigation officer in the case, had petitioned for them to be remanded for seven days.
