A Dhaka court has granted a 10-day remand for former Deputy Speaker Shamsul Hoque Tuku, former State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak and General Secretary of Chhatra League's Dhaka University unit Tanvir Hasan Saikat in the case of murder of a rickshaw puller in Paltan.
The three were presented before Dhaka's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court by the police on Thursday. The court was requested to grant a 10-day remand for a thorough investigation into the case. After hearing the plea, Metropolitan Magistrate Md Rashidul Alam approved the 10-day remand.
Earlier, on August 14, the trio was arrested while hiding in the Nikunja residential area under the Khilkhet police station in Dhaka. Following their arrest, they were taken to the Detective Branch (DB) office at Minto Road in the capital.
The incident dates back to July 19, when rickshaw puller Kamal Mia (39) was shot and killed during the quota reform protests in the Paltan area. Kamal's wife, Fatema Khatun (36), filed a murder case with Paltan Police Station on July 20, naming unidentified perpetrators.
