Two of the three suspects arrested over the death of BUET student Mohtassim Masud have tested positive for drugs.

The drug tests were conducted on Mubin Al Mamun, Mirazul Karim, and Asif Chowdhury at General Hospital Narayanganj on Friday noon.

Mubin and Mirazul tested positive for drugs, he said.

The incident occurred late Friday night when a private car ran over Mohtassim, a student of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, or BUET, while he was standing at the Rupganj police checkpoint on the 300 Feet Road in Purbachal.

His classmates Mehedi Hasan Khan and Amit Saha were severely injured.

Mubin, son of former brigadier general Abdullah Al Mamun, was driving the car at the time.

The car was also registered under the name of the former military officer, reports UNB.

Abdullah confirmed that his son held a driving licence.

However, he declined to comment further on the incident.

Police officer Mehedi Islam said the victim's father, Masud Mia, filed a case with the Rupganj Police Station on Friday morning.

The three detainees have been named as accused in the case, which falls under the Road Transport Act, 2018.

The case dossier says Mohtassim left his home around 8pm on Thursday with his two friends, riding a motorcycle to 300 Feet Road.

They dined at Nila Market, and around 3am, while returning home, they were stopped at the police checkpoint.

At that moment, a speeding car passed through the checkpoint and struck the students' motorcycle, killing Mohtassim on the spot and injuring the other two.

Mehedi was admitted to Square Hospital, while Amit was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Police searched the private car and reported finding a beer can and an empty liquor bottle.

The detainees were immediately sent for drug tests.

Police have also applied for a five-day remand for questioning, with a hearing scheduled for Sunday.

BUET students have described the incident as a "murder" and have made a 6-point list of demands, calling for the maximum punishment for the accused.
