Two arrested in connection with murder during Anti-discrimination Movement

Police arrested two people, including a Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader, in connection with the murder of a protester during the Anti-Discrimination Movement in Uttara on Friday night.

The arrestees are Md Harez Uddin, 42, an Awami League activist and Mahiyanul Haque Orchi, 27, BCL president Uttara Ward No. 1.

Police detained Harez Uddin at 8:40 pm on Friday from Road No.18 in Uttara Sector 11. Mahianul Haque Orchi was arrested at 3:40 am from Road No. 4 in the same sector, according to a UNB report.

A murder case was filed with Uttara West Police Station on August 22, 2024 in connection with the murder of victim Lablu Mia.

According to the case statement, on August 5, 2024, the protesting students and people were staying in the Rabindra Sarani area of Sector 3, including various roads of Uttara. At that time, the leaders and activists of different front organisations of Awami League started attacking and firing on the anti-discrimination students and people. Victim Lablu Mia was shot in the head in the incident.

Later, Lablu Mia was taken to Uttara Crescent Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Muhammad Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner (DC-media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the matter.

They were arrested after analysing intelligence information and CCTV footage around the spot, said Talebur Rahman.

The arrested have been sent to the learned court. The operation is underway to arrest others involved in the Lablu Mia murder case.
