Two assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) of police -- one from Gazipur and other from Tangail -- have been arrested reportedly for kidnapping three friends from Gazipur and demanding Tk 3.0 million as ransom threatening to kill them on crossfire.

The arrestees are ASI Abdullah Al Mamun of Kaliakoir Police Station in Gazipur and ASI Musfiqur Rahman of Mirzapur Police Station in Tangail.

Superintendent of Police of Gazipur Shamsunnahar held a press conference at her office in the afternoon over the incident, reports UNB.

The three victims -- Raihan Sarker, Labib Uddin and Nawshad Islam -- were also produced before journalists at the press conference where they narrated the incident.

The SP said the two ASIs have been withdrawn and later arrested in a case filed with Kaliakoir Police Station over the kidnapping of the three youths from Sutrapur of Kaliakoir upazila on Wednesday.

The victims said they along with Taribullah and Rakibul Rahman started for the Dhaka International Trade Fair in the capital in a private car on Wednesday afternoon.

They made a stopover at Shila Brishty Filling Station at Sutrapur to take gas. At that time, Taribullah and Rakibul Rahman went to a nearby to shop to take tea while the rest remained by the car.

As Raihan, Labib and Nawshad advanced several yards with the car after taking gas, the two ASIs along with 3-4 people intercepted them and dragged them into a microbus.

They took the three youths beneath the under-construction Dewra Flyover in Mirzapur and demanded Tk 3.0 million for their release threatening to kill them in ‘crossfire’.

At one stage of bargaining, Mamun and Musfiqur told the youths that they would free them if they could give Tk 1.0 million.

In the meantime, the two youths who escaped the kidnapping bid informed families and police.

At the order of the police, a team of police from Kaliakoir went to the spot and rescued the victims with the help of Mirzapur Police Station. The two ASIs were attached to their respective police lines over the incident and finally arrested.
