Two held near Sherpur border over ‘Hadi shooting’

Police have arrested two men at Sherpur’s Nalitabari during border surveillance to prevent the escape of those who shot Sharif Osman bin Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho.

DMP Additional Commissioner confirmed the developments at a press conference on Sunday.

With these arrests, three suspects have now been detained in connection with the shooting, police said.

The two men from Sherpur are reportedly linked to human trafficking. Authorities plan to interrogate them to obtain more information.

Police also arrested the owner of the motorcycle used during the attack on Hadi and seized the vehicle.

On Friday, Hadi was shot in the head while travelling in a moving battery-run rickshaw, with the assailant firing from a motorcycle.

Critically injured, Hadi was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for emergency surgery before being transferred to Evercare Hospital. A medical board at Evercare said his condition remained “critical.”

DMP officials identified two main suspects: Faisal Karim Masud, who reportedly fired the shot, and Alamgir Sheikh, who was the motorcycle driver. To prevent the attackers from fleeing, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has increased patrols and surveillance along border areas, which led to the arrests of the two Sherpur suspects.

When asked if a case had been filed, Additional Commissioner Nazrul Islam said authorities hoped Hadi’s family would lodge the complaint but acknowledged they had been preoccupied with his treatment.

A draft case has been prepared, and if the family does not file it, police will proceed as complainants, he added.

Responding to a question on motive, Nazrul said: “Those who oppose Inqilab Moncho are behind the attempt on Hadi’s life.”
