Two more patients infected with COVID-19 have died in Chattogram. Both of the dead had been suffering from kidney and heart issues as well.
Four people have died so far in the district after coronavirus cases began to crop up again. All of the dead had previously had life-threatening illnesses.
Chattogram Civil Surgeon Dr Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Sunday that one of the dead - Md Ershad, 14 – had been suffering from kidney disease and had undergone dialysis on Friday. Afterwards, he tested positive for COVID.
“He also had a heart attack and was on a ventilator afterwards. When he was brought to Chattogram General Hospital, his condition was critical. He died yesterday.”
The other patient who died after a coronavirus infection is 45-year-old Yasmin Akhter, who hailed from Chattogram’s Karnaphuli Upazila. The Civil Surgeon’s Office said that she suffered a cardiogenic septic shock.
Dr Akram Hossain, superintendent of the 250-bed Chattogram General Hospital, said: “She was already on oxygen support when she arrived at the hospital. She was brought here when the COVID was detected. Her physical condition was critical. She died yesterday.”
“These patients did not die just because they had COVID-19. They were already in critical condition with life-threatening diseases.”
On Friday, Fazilatunnesa, 71 - a resident of Baklia in the port city - died in the Covid ICU ward of Chattogram General Hospital. She was suffering from lung cancer.
Before that, on Jun 16, the District Civil Surgeon’s Office said that Shafiul Islam, 75 - a resident of Zoraganj in Mirsarai Upazila – had also succumbed while infected with the coronavirus. He was also suffering from post-operative complications and kidney disease.
Meanwhile, according to the report of the Chattogram Civil Surgeon’s Office on Sunday, 12 people have been identified with coronavirus in the district in the past 24 hours. Of them, 11 of are residents of the port city.
Over the past 24 hours, 253 samples have been tested at 12 public and private hospitals and diagnostic centres in the district.
So far, a total of 74 people coronavirus patients have been identified in the district, 66 of them are from the port city. The remaining eight are residents of different Upazilas.
Two coronavirus cases were initially identified in Chattogram on Jun 7 and another on Jun 10, the Chattogram’s Civil Surgeon’s Office.
Of those, 37 are men, 34 are women and one is a child.
Of the four deaths, there was one man, two women, and a child.
After the initial outbreak of COVID, Chattogram General Hospital was designated for the treatment of the disease in the district.
Initially, there were ICU beds at the hospital, but that service was limited due to the lack of ventilators. Later, the number of ICU beds for COVID patients was increased to five by connecting three additional ventilators.
