The bodies of two young men who went missing while bathing in the Bhairab River near the Ratanpur–Rashikpur switchgate in Mujibnagar upazila of Meherpur have been recovered.
A diving team from the Khulna Fire Service retrieved the bodies between 7:30 pm and 8:30 pm on Monday, officials said.
The deceased were identified as Tanvir, 20, son of Hannan Sheikh from Tengramari village in Meherpur Sadar upazila and a first-year student of Meherpur Municipal College; and Kaushik, son of Mohin Sheikh from Amdah village, an eighth-grade student of Aleya Madrasa.
Witnesses said the two had gone to bathe at the switchgate with friends on Monday afternoon. They accidentally fell into deep water and could not get out, reports UNB.
On information, police from Mujibnagar Police Station and members of the fire service rushed to the scene and began a rescue operation, said Selim Reza, station master of Mujibnagar Fire service and civil defence.
"After around six hours of effort, the diving team recovered the first body at 7:42 pm and the second body at 8:27 pm," he added.
