Professor Dr S M A Faiz has resigned as chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), citing health reasons. He submitted his resignation letter to the Ministry of Education on Monday morning, addressing it to the secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division.
Officials from the ministry and the UGC confirmed the matter to local media. In the letter, Faiz said he was unable to continue his duties due to physical illness and requested necessary steps for his release from the post.
Faiz was appointed UGC chairman on 5 September 2024 for a four-year term following the political change after the August 5 uprising. However, more than two years of his tenure still remained. Sources said speculation about his possible removal had recently been circulating.
