Hopes get in high pitch about a remedy for the prolonged Rohingya crisis Bangladesh is burdened with as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is now in Dhaka for a four-day visit.

Foreign affairs adviser of the interim government Md Touhid Hossain received Guterres at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on the UN chief's arrival on Thursday afternoon.

Today (Friday), Foreign Affairs Adviser Hossain and High Representative of the Chief Adviser on Rohingya Issue and Priority Matters Dr Khalilur Rahman will call on the UN Secretary-General at his hotel suite at 9:00 am. Thereafter, at 10:00 am, the UN chief will meet Chief Adviser Dr Yunus at the Chief Adviser's Office.

After the meeting, Mr Guterres will fly to the seashore district of Cox's Bazar (Friday) to spend the full day. Chief Adviser of the interim government Professor Yunus will accompany him, and both will have Iftar with the Rohingya refugees flushed out of their homes in Myanmar.

The two leaders are expected to interact with Rohingya imams and community leaders during the event.

Before the evening breakfast, the Secretary-General will visit several facilities at the camps, including the Watch Tower, Learning Centre, Multipurpose Service Centre, and a jute-production site.

He is also likely to engage with Rohingya youth and children before returning to Dhaka in the evening.

"It is expected that one lakh Rohingya will join the Iftar with them and the Iftar will be hosted by the chief adviser," Deputy Press Secretary Azad Mazumder said while briefing the press.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the UNSG will hold talks with civil-society members and the members of the national consensus committee formed by the post-uprising government headed by Prof Yunus.

Issues related to reforms on the cusp of transition "will be the main agenda in these discussions", officials said.

He would address a press briefing on Saturday afternoon at the Hotel Intercontinental and then join an Iftar hosted by the chief adviser.

Wrapping up his Bangladesh mission, the UN chief is scheduled to leave Dhaka on Sunday morning.
