Uncertainty looms large over the future political course of the country after the disclosure by NCP Convener Nahid Islam to the media on Thursday night that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus was considering resignation.
Rumours about Dr Yunus's resignation had been there in the air since this disclosure, though several advisers brushed aside the idea.
Hours after the disclosure, adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan told the media on Friday that the interim government was facing challenges due to a series of demands by different organisations.
She said that the government had three main tasks which are to carry out reform, to try the killers and to hold next elections.
"If we cannot perform these responsibilities, then there is no need to remain in government", she told the reporters.
“We have also mentioned that election will be held between next December and June,” she said, adding that reform and trial were also priorities for the government.
Meanwhile, a special assistant to the CA on Friday in his facebook postcard said that Dr Yunus would not resign.
But hours later he said that it was his personal opinion and he should not be quoted.
When contacted, several leaders of BNP told the FE that the NCP leaders might try to fish in the troubled water spreading the rumours of Dr Yunus's resignation.
They said that they wanted to cooperate with this government provided that there should be a clear roadmap for the next elections.
Otherwise, there will be uncertainty and the democracy will be at stake, said a standing committee member of the party.
On the other hand, NCP leader Nahid in a Facebook post alleged that a conspiracy was underway to stage another 1/11 referring to the takeover of power by the military-led government.
In the latest development, the Jamaat e Islami, considered as a close ally of the NCP, is going to meet the CA this (Saturday) evening, sources said. The CA Office had okayed the schedule.
