A Union Parishad chairman has been arrested in connection with the looting of sand and stone from Sylhet's famed tourist spot,‘Sada Pathar’.
Companiganj Police Station chief Uzayer Mahmud Adnan said Alamgir Alam, the chairman of Purbo Islampur Union Parishad, was apprehended by the Detective Branch (DB) from his home in the Upazila Sadar early Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, a joint force has started an operation to recover the stones looted from the Sada Pathar tourist spot, reports bdnews24.com.
The operation began around 10:00 pm on Wednesday and continued all night in several locations. During these raids, 130 trucks loaded with stone were seized.
Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Sher Mahbub Murad told reporters, "The seized stones will be returned to Sada Pathar. Additionally, two separate checkpoints will be set up in Companiganj and Gowainghat today to monitor and stop stone extraction around the clock."
According to Companiganj Upazila Nirbahi (executive) Officer Azizunnahar, 12,000 cubic feet of looted stone were recovered from various locations during the raid and returned to the Sada Pathar area and other parts of the Dhalai River.
