A Union Parishad member in Bandarban's Naikhongchhari has been injured as he was hit by a bullet reportedly from Myanmar on Monday afternoon.
Saber Hossain was shot in the knee of his left leg while standing near the zero line of the border around 5 in the afternoon, local media reported quoting witnesses.
The incident took place when he, accompanied by several local journalists, was there to inquire about members of Myanmar Border Guard Police who have fled and sought refuge with the Border Guard Bangladesh.
The journalists accompanying him rescued and rushed him to local upazila health complex.
Abdul Hamid, president of the Naikhongchhari Press Club, said that there was a sound of intense gunfire from across the border at the time Saber was shot.
Injured UP member Hossain mentioned that he was experiencing severe pain where he was shot in the leg and had difficulty speaking.
Abu Jafar Mohammad Saleem, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer (UHFPO) of Naikhongchhari, stated that the injured UP member had received primary treatment and was sent to Cox's Bazar General Hospital.
While the injury was not critical, an X-ray of the knee where he was shot would determine whether a bullet was lodged inside.
