Chargé d'Affaires Tracey Ann Jacobson at the US Embassy in Dhaka pledged on Thursday that the United States would extend its fullest support towards strengthening the independence of the judiciary in Bangladesh.

She made the commitment during a courtesy call on the Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed, according to a press release issued by the Supreme Court administration.

Ambassador Jacobson congratulated the chief justice on completing one year in office, and expressed optimism that the CJ's strong leadership will play a significant role in promoting good governance and ensuring justice in Bangladesh in the days ahead.

They also held detailed discussions on bilateral judicial cooperation, the protection of human rights, and the rule of law.

The CJ highlighted the different steps taken over the past year to develop and strengthen the judiciary.

In particular, CJ Ahmed discussed plans to establish an independent, robust, and justice-oriented judiciary and the judiciary's role in safeguarding human rights in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Jacobson also described different development initiatives undertaken by the CJ toward establishing a robust, independent, and impartial judiciary as timely and effective steps.

The initiatives include the announcement of a judicial reform roadmap, the issuance of 12-point directives to enhance transparency in legal services, and the enactment of a law for appointing judges to the higher judiciary through the Supreme Judicial Appointments Council.
