UZ polls: Policeman among two shot in attack at Chattogram polling station

A police constable and a man sustained bullet injuries as Awami League men allegedly attacked and opened fire at a polling station in Chandanaish upazila on Sunday morning.

The injured Constable Farhad Hossain, 31, of Chandanaish Police Station, was admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Another bullet injured could not be identified immediately, says a UNB report.

Keshab Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Chandanaish Police Station, said that a gang of miscreants swooped on the polling station at Purba Chandanaish Government Primary School aiming to rig votes.

Locals said that within one hour of voting begins, the supporters of Awami League candidate K M Nazim Uddin entered the polling booths in a bid to take control of the polling station.

As presiding officer Abdul Matin tried to obstruct them, they swooped on him.

Later, the clash ensued as the on-duty policemen came to rescue the presiding officer. Several gunshots were heard during the clash that left the cop and the unidentified man bullet injured, according to the witnesses.

Besides, five people were also injured as police charged batons to bring the situation under control.

Police also arrested three people from the spot, said the OC.

Meanwhile, following the incident, the election commission has suspended voting in the centre.
