HC grants bail to ex-Secy Kazal and five otherThe High Court on Wednesday granted bail to Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal, former Secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), and five other SC lawyers for different terms in a case filed over the violence centring the SCBA election.

Five other lawyers who managed bail from the HC are Nahid Sultana Juthi, former Deputy Attorney General Shakila Rawshan Jahan, former Assistant Attorney General Zakir Hossain Masud, Fatema Moushumi Kabita and Barrister Osman Chowdhury.

Three separate HC benches headed by Justice Md Rezaul Haque, Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman and Justice Md Ruhul Quddus passed the orders, respectively.

Md Shaifur Rahman Siddique Saif, who was assaulted during the SCBA polls violence, filed the case on March 8 this year with Shahbagh Police Station, accusing 20 people, including Barrister Ruhul Quddus and Nahid Sultana Juthi.

Nahid Sultana Juthi, an independent secretary candidate in the SCBA polls for the session 2024-2025 and also the wife of Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, was made the number one accused in the First Information Report (FIR).

Barrister Kazal, who was also a secretary candidate in the SCBA polls from the pro-BNP panel, was detained by CID police on March 9 from the Paltan area in the capital city. Later, he was placed on remand and after the completion of remand, he was sent to jail.

Lawyers A J Mohammad Ali and Zainul Abedin appeared in the court hearing on behalf of Ruhul Quddus Kazal and lawyers AF Hassan Ariff, Ahsanul Karim and Sheikh Awsafur Rahman appeared for five others.
