Different lower courts in virtual hearings across the country granted bail to 54,677 people in 40 working days from May 11 to July 9.

Md Saifur Rahman, special officer of High Court Division, confirmed this to the Financial Express (FE) on Sunday morning.

The courts also settled 107,037 bail petitions during the period under review.

The lower courts in virtual hearings granted bail to some 4,915 people in the five days to Thursday (July 5 to July 9).

As many as 11,514 bail pleas were settled during the period.

Apart from this, 651 children secured bail through different virtual courts across the country in the last 40 working days.

Of the children, 471 were handed over to their guardians.

The Supreme Court suspended the operation of all courts as part of the government efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus since March 26.

However, the court proceedings began through videoconference on May 11 after President Abdul Hamid promulgated an ordinance on May 10 that allows all courts to conduct trial proceedings through videoconference and other digital means.
