World Bank (WB) funded Singimari Beel project of Nilphamari district needs further excavation and renovation. The beel is consist of vast areas of three union parishads namely Khogsabari, Kundopukur and part of Nilphamari Municipality as well.

The renowned beel having 7.10 km in length and occupying 20,000 hectares of land was excavated in 1969 to eliminate water logging and provide irrigation facilities in the beel area by storing water through regulators.

Three bridges- cum regulators, 44 outlets and 14 culverts were built by the Water Development Board (WDB). Electricity line and four power pumps under BADC were installed taking it as a national priority project. For the entire area 15 irrigation committees comprising local farmers were formed.

Farmer sources said supplementary rehabilitation programme was implemented once in the year 1989. Sources said due to lack of proper re-excavation the entire Beel area has been filled with silt and there was no enough water for irrigation.

There is a total absence of maintenance of infrastructure appliances such as outlets, regulators, culverts and water pumps.

The local people including farmers urged the government to take necessary steps to run the project properly.
