BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has raised concerns over the death of a Jubo Dal leader in Cumilla, alleging that the youth was detained by law enforcement and later returned dead.
“Why would such an incident occur during Dr Yunus’ [Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus] tenure?” he questioned while speaking at a meeting of the Thikana Bangladesh central convening committee in Dhaka’s Nayapaltan on Saturday, noting that Dr Yunus is highly regarded by various human rights organisations and Western democratic countries.
Joint forces allegedly picked up Towhidul Islam, 42, convener of Panchthuri union Jubo Dal in Cumilla Sadar upazila, from his home early Friday. He later died at Cumilla Medical College Hospital.
His family members alleged that Towhidul was tortured to death, referring to marks of torture on his body.
As news of his death spread, BNP—of which Juba Dal is a wing—has called for investigating the incident.
The interim government has also ordered an urgent investigation into the death of the Cumilla Juba Dal leader, according to the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.
