Workers block highways in Gazipur; several factories declare holiday amid protests

Several hundred workers staged a protest on Monday morning blocking Dhaka-Mymensingh and Dhaka-Tangail highways in Gazipur.

Over 300 workers from the Mim Alema Design Garments factory in the Bhogra area of Gazipur blocked the highways, demanding payment of their dues, UNB reports.

During the protest, workers threw brickbats at nearby factories around the Bhogra bypass, forcing the authorities to declare a holiday in several factories, including Roya Fashion Limited, Mastrade International Garments Limited, Colossus Apparel Limited, Rose Sweater Limited, Square Fashion Limited, and Fardar Fashion Limited.

Gazipur Industrial Area Police Superintendent AKM Zahirul Islam said that the workers were removed from the road within half an hour and traffic returned to normal.

Attempts to contact the factory authorities for further information were unsuccessful.

The workers claimed they had not been paid their monthly salaries properly.
