Workers Safety Forum expresses concern about golden handshake for jute mill workers

Workers Safety Forum expressed concern over the announcement of shutting down of state-owned jute mills and voluntarily retirement of workers through golden handshake.

It said, the decision is inhuman as the workers have already been passing through a very bad time because of coronavirus pandemic in the country.

The workers’ rights organisation made its observation through a press release on Wednesday.    

However, the organisation said they have been informed from different media that Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) has started a process to send  about 25,000 permanent workers to voluntarily retirement.

But the workers did not take the BJMC move easily. They also announced to go for hunger strike after a fruitless meeting between labour state minister and workers’ leaders, it said.

 Although the workers have been demanding for modernising machinery of state-run Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) for long days, the authorities failed to do it, the press release also said.

The organisation demanded taking immediate steps for required research, development works for making sure the sustainability of jute industry and its workers’ protection.
