A writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking a ban on the operation of faulty aircraft over densely populated areas in the capital.

Senior lawyer Zainul Abedin filed the petition on Tuesday. The hearing on the petition is scheduled to take place in the afternoon, according to bdnews24.com.

On Monday, an F-7 BGI training aircraft of the Air Force crashed onto the Milestone School and College campus in Dhaka's Diabari during class hours. Many students inside the classrooms suffered fatal burn injuries.

The crash killed 27 people, including 25 children, while 78 others are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals.

In the wake of the tragedy, Bangladesh is observing a day of mourning on Tuesday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate (ISPR), the fighter jet took off at 1:06 pm from the AK Khandaker Air Base in Kurmitola as part of a routine training exercise. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft experienced a mechanical failure.

To prevent greater damage and casualties, the pilot, Flight Lt Tawkir Islam, made every effort to divert the jet to a less populated area. However, the aircraft ultimately crashed into a two-storey academic building of Milestone School and College.

The ISPR also said that a high-level probe committee has been formed by the Air Force to determine the cause of the crash. Further details will be disclosed once the investigation is complete.
