Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus has held talks with the National Citizen Party (NCP) as part of efforts to ease mounting political discord and prepare the ground for general elections.

The meeting comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions, with recent clashes between rival parties intensifying the pre-election atmosphere, reports bdnews24.com.

The NCP delegation was led by Chief Organiser Hasnat Abdullah, joined by Senior Joint Convenor Ariful Islam Adib, Senior Joint Member Secretary Tasnim Jara and Senior Joint Coordinator Abdul Hannan Masud.

Earlier in the afternoon, Yunus met with the Jamaat-e-Islami. He is scheduled to hold talks with the BNP later at night.

A meeting with the BNP had originally been set for 3pm but was postponed at the request of party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who cited a party anniversary discussion at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh.

The meetings come in the backdrop of Friday night’s clashes between the Jatiya Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad, in which joint forces baton-charged protesters. The clashes left Gono Odhikar President Nurul Haque Nur seriously injured.

The interim government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Gono Odhikar Parishad activists countrywide protested the assault on Nur on Saturday, vandalising Jatiya Party Office in different districts, including the headquarters in Dhaka.
