When everyone across the globe is terrified of the coronavirus, Khabirunnesa, a one hundred and one-year-old woman from Gopalganj, has recovered from the pandemic.

She returned to her village home in Gopalganj from Dhaka on Monday last after winning the battle against Covid-19. Currently, this woman is in quarantine at her home.

Khabirunnesa, wife of late Altaf Bhuiyan of Chandradighalia village in Sadar upazila of Gopalganj, had already been suffering from various chronic diseases, including skin cancer, heart disease and diabetes.

She lost her husband 20 years ago and her eldest son two years ago while her three other sons are living away in the United States. She has three daughters in the country, with whom she resides.

She went to her daughter's house at Uttara in Dhaka early last month for treatment.

Her daughter Selina Zakir (48) and grandson Tamim were found coronavirus positive after a test on May 13. They were later admitted to Regent Hospital at Uttara.

On 19 May, Khabirunnesa was diagnosed with coronavirus after she came in contact with her daughter and grandson who were already infected with the virus.

The centenarian woman was later admitted to the same hospital and was kept in isolation where she made full recovery.

Khabirunnesa's daughter Selina Zakir said, "Four of us, including my mother, were infected with coronavirus. Earlier, mother had a stent placement for heart disease. Once stones were removed from her gallbladder through operation. She also has skin cancer and diabetes. Despite all these, my mother could win the battle against the deadly virus.

She is dreaming of healing thousands of coronavirus patients in Bangladesh. Doctors at the hospital said it was a rare happening.

"On re-examination on May 30 and June 1, my mother's test reports came negative. Along with treatment, who can win coronavirus with morale and confidence," she added,

Gopalganj General Hospital Assistant Director Asit Kumar Mallik said there is prevailing panic over coronavirus everywhere in the district.

The number of people returning home after recovering from the disease is increasing.

"So there is nothing to be afraid of. Everyone should be careful of their health through complying with the restrictions and maintaining social distance," he added.

"The 100-year-old woman's return after wining victory against the deadly virus suggests that there is nothing to fear if people of any age get infected. This is increasing the morale of those who are going through medical services from the front today," he said.
