Some 77 per cent businesses in a shopping mall in Chattogram were found guilty of not paying VAT.

The VAT intelligence of National Board of Revenue (NBR) drive found that some 203 out of 263 business companies surveyed in an elite shopping mall in Chattogram city area were not paying VAT.

The VAT intelligence conducted the drive on September 7 at the Mimi Super Market at Nasirabad, Bayezid Bostami Road in Chattogram and found those companies doing business by not complying with vat law.

Of the total 263, only 60 companies got enlisted under the new VAT law. The rest 203 companies were not registered and do not deposit VAT money to government exchequer despite collecting it from customers, it added.

Meanwhile, the 60 enlisted or registered business companies were found not paying returns and VAT as per actual sales, said the team.

According to the VAT law, it is mandatory to hang the registration certificate in a visible place and only 10 businesses were doing so.

The intelligence team filed separate cases against 203 unregistered companies for not registering as per the provisions of VAT law, lodged cases and fined Tk 10,000 against the 50 registered companies for not hanging the certificates.

Such drives will continue at other shopping malls, markets and other places in phases, said the team.
