A large number of farmers in Narsingdi district are now growing chemical-free vegetables using compost instead of different chemical fertilisers and poisonous pesticides, reports BSS.

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has taken necessary steps to inspire the farmers into using organic fertilisers and applying less quantities of chemical manure aimed at producing poison-free vegetables.

The DAE has raised awareness among the peasants on the bad effects of using pesticides and chemical fertilisers in vegetable fields and imparted them training on pest management.

Narsingdi DAE Deputy Director Shovan Kumar Dhar told the state-owned news agency that because of the training and motivation, a large number of farmers, including women, in the district are now quite aware of the harmful effects of using chemical fertilisers in their vegetable fields.

Narsingdi is a leading vegetable producing district in the country and some 30 to 40 per cent of its vegetables usually go to Dhaka city and some districts.
