Two police officers have been shot dead in a targeted attack on the convoy of a senior police officer in Pakistan's south-western city of Quetta on Wednesday morning.

Local Urdu TV channels reported that two unknown attackers riding a bike, opened fire on the vehicle of Divisional Superintendent of Police Hameedullah Dasti when he was reportedly going to his office around 9 am.

The incident took place at Samungli road in Quetta, the provincial capital of the country's south-western Balochistan Province.

The senior officer remained safe in the incident while two policemen deployed there received bullet injuries and succumbed to their wounds, said a senior police officer in the city, adding that the assailants escaped unhurt after the attack.

News agency Xinhua reports that security and rescue personnel reached the site following the incident, cordoned off the area and kicked off a search operation to apprehend the on-the-run assailants.

No group or person has claimed the attack yet.
