Bangladesh logs 1,742 virus cases, 50 deaths in 24 hours

Bangladesh has registered 50 new fatalities from the coronavirus in a day, taking the death toll to 11,755.

The caseload jumped by 1,742 in a 24-hour count on Wednesday to 767,338, according to the latest government data, reports bdnews24.com.

Another 3,433 people recovered from the illness through treatment at home and in hospital care, bringing the tally of recoveries to 698,465.

As many as 20,284 samples were tested across the country in the last 24 hours, yielding a positivity rate of 8.59 per cent.

The latest official figures put the recovery rate at 91.02 per cent, while the mortality rate stands at 1.53 per cent.

Globally, over 154.38 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 3.22 million have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
