Bangladesh is now the main country of ship demolition across the world, according to the latest report of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

In 2018, around 47.20 per cent of tonnage of ships were sold to Bangladesh for demolition.

“Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Turkey maintained their leadership in this segment of the maritime supply chain,” said the UNCTAD report. “However, for the first time, Bangladesh became the main country of demolition,” it added.

Bangladesh received some 8,632 thousand gross tons of ships for scrapping in the last year and around 70 per cent of this was oil tankers.

Some 1,115 thousand gross tons of bulk carriers was also sold to Bangladesh for demolition in the past year.

India was the second top destination of ship demolition in 2018 and the country received 25.60 per cent of tonnage, or 4,690 thousand gross tons of ships, for scrapping.

Pakistan was followed by India as 21.50 per cent of tonnage of ships were sold to Pakistan for demolition.

‘Tonnage’ refers to a calculation of the volume or cargo volume of a ship.

Globally 18 300.9 thousand gross tons of ships were sold for demolition in 2018, according to UNCTAD’s Review of Maritime Transport 2019 released in the last week of October.
