BD adds 22 virus deaths, 2381 fresh cases in 24 hours: DGHS

Twenty-two more people died from coronavirus (COVID-19) in Bangladesh in the last 24 hours till Monday, according to the statistics of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

With this, the death toll due to the deadly virus infection reached at 672, Additional Director General of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr Nasima Sultana said.

Besides, 2,381 more people tested positive for the virus during the same period, raising the number of such cases in the country to 49,534, she added.

Prof Dr Nasima came up with the disclosure in the daily online news bulletin at the Management Information System (MIS) in the afternoon.

Among the victims, one patient is aged between 21 and 30, eight of the deceased are between 41 and 50, four between 51 and 60, seven between 61 and 70 and two are above 70 years, Dr Nasima said.

Of them, 19 were men and 3 were women. Of them, eleven were from Dhaka division, eight from Chattogram, two from Sylhet and one from Barisal division.

Some 11, 439 samples were tested in 52 labs across the country until 8:00 am today for the highly infectious disease.

During the same period, a total of 816 patients recovered from the virus during the same time, taking the number of recoveries to 10,597.

Earlier on Sunday, 40 patients died and 2,545 people tested positive for the virus.

Bangladesh reported the first cases of coronavirus on March 08 and the first death 10 days later on March 18.

According to worldometer.info, Bangladesh now ranks the 21st among 215 countries while 20 worst-affected countries are treated as the hotspots for the coronavirus.

In Asia, India, Iran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, China, Pakistan and Qatar have already become the global hotspots of the viral strains. Now, Bangladesh is set to emerge as a new global hotspot.

So far coronavirus infected 6,281,132 people globally, of them 374,182 are died and 2,853,643 people have recovered, according to the website that provides real-time updates.

Of the infected, 3,053,307 are currently being treated while 53,403 of them are in serious or critical condition, the website data shows.

As the virus began sweeping across the world, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the coronavirus crisis a pandemic on March 11.
