BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir termed on Monday their rallies held at 32 districts recently as 'successful' ones, saying people wanted the release of party chairperson Khaleda Zia and her advanced treatment abroad.

"We (BNP) have successfully ended the rallies as people had enthusiastically participated in the events that have been testifying that country's people wanted Khaleda Zia to be released and they would no longer see this government in power," he said.

"We (BNP) firmly want to say that the people of the country have awakened and they will restore democracy in the country," he said at a press briefing at the party chairperson's Gulshan office in the capital.

He demanded the withdrawal of false cases filed against party leaders and activists and the release of the party workers detained during the rallies that ended on December 30, 2021.

Mr Alamgir said the ruling party stalwarts had attacked and tried to foil their rallies in several districts.

In Sirajganj district, he said, the ruling party followers had attacked them with firearms and other lethal weapons and pictures of those were published in the media.

"What happened in Sirajganj was simply an act of terror unleashed by the ruling party," he said adding that six cases were filed by police and Awami League against BNP leaders and activists.

He said the attacks by the ruling party activists on their (BNP) rally in Habiganj district had left many party followers seriously injured including serious eyes injuries.

“Besides cases were filed against 2,000 BNP supporters there,” he said.

He demanded immediate arrests of those who had committed this heinous act and bring them to the book.

Fakhrul claimed that despite this odd/adverse situation, the party leaders, activists along mass people had succeeded in their rallies.

He said rallies were held in Feni and Jashore districts by defying section 144.

"It has been proven that the people of the country don't want to see this government no more in power. The people want Khaleda Zia to be freed and see her better treatment abroad. But the government (midnight) wants to establish a one-party rule in the country by ignoring it (BNP's demand)," he alleged.

BNP’s standing committee member Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku and its organising secretary Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu, among others, were present.
