BNP’s defeated mayoral candidate in the recently-held elections to the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Dr Shahadat Hossain on Wednesday filed a case against nine people including the Chief Election Commissioner for ‘manipulating the election results.’

Dr Shahadat filed the case with Chattogram District Judge Court, said Advocate Delwar Hossain Chowdhury, a counsel of the plaintiff.

He also demanded reelections to the city corporation cancelling the results.

Newly Elected Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Rezaul Karim Chowdhury and Secretary to the Election Commission were among the accused.

The other accused include Chattogram Regional Election Officer, Returning Officer, Mayor candidates MA Matin, Khokon Chowdhury, Mohammad Wahed Murad and Zannatul Islam.

Talking to reporters, Dr Shahadat said, “Some 4-6 percent of votes were cast till 2:00pm on the election day but the Election Commission showed 22.5 per cent. I want to see the voter turnout in each hour but after they failed to show me it though ten days have passed. A total of 4,885 EVM machines were used but they provided the printed copy of only ten booths. That’s why I have filed the case and demanded reelection to the CCC after announcing new schedule.”

Awami League’s Rezaul Karim Chowdhury elected mayor unofficially by defeating BNP’s contender Dr Shahadat Hossain in CCC polls held on January 27 amid violence and various irregularities.

Rezaul bagged 369,248 votes while his rival Shahadat Hossain secured only 52,489 votes, reports UNB.
