Health experts at a programme in the city on Tuesday observed that child tuberculosis (TB) and extrapulmonary TB are the two emerging challenges for a high TB burden country like Bangladesh.

Besides, people are still showing an indifferent attitude towards TB while there are various organ TBs which are not detected properly becoming a threat in the fight against the infectious disease, they viewed.

But people and media in general do not give due importance to transmission of TB as in the case of the spread of coronavirus, they opined.

Although annual mortality rate from TB in Bangladesh is much higher than Covid, people are more concerned about the deadly virus for which they wear masks, they noted.

They suggested that people go for early diagnosis and treatment as TB is preventable and curable through proper treatment which is free of cost.

They expressed the views at the launch of a year-long awareness campaign on TB marking the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The programme was organsied by National TB Control Programme of DGHS with support from USAID.

Health Minister Zahid Maleque was present as the chief guest.

Director of MBDC and LD, TB-L and ASP Prof Dr Shamiul Islam made the keynote presentation.

He said 0.29 million new TB cases were detected in 2020 after screening 2.7 million people.
