Court sentence three to jail for selling turtles

A mobile court Friday sentenced three businessmen to nine months imprisonment each for selling endangered species of turtles in Shakhari Bazar area in the capital.

The convicted were Ponir Chandra Das, 40, Dipok Nandi, 55 and Moyna Rani Das, 39.

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested them from the city's Shakhari Bazar area while they were selling turtles of endangered species, Mahiuddin Faruqui, Senior Assistant Director of RAB-10, said.

Acting on a tip off, the members of the wildlife conservation unit of the RAB-10 carried out a drive in the city's Shakhari Bazar area.

Executive Magistrate of RAB Headquarters M Sarwar Alam, who led the court, inflicted punishment on the accused, reports BSS.

RAB said a group of 12 to 14 members was found indulged in the illegal turtle sale. They collected those from Munshiganj and Narshingdi areas.

The elite force caught three of the group with the turtles.

Later, the seized turtles were released at the Botanical Garden.
