The High Court on Monday ordered the hospitals concerned and clinics of the country to test the COVID-19 samples of pregnant women on a priority basis.
The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order after holding virtual hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.
Advocate Md Tanveer Ahmed took part in the hearing on behalf of the writ petition while Additional attorney General Murad Reza and Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder stood for the state.
Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder said the HC also ordered the respondents to take initiatives so that the pregnant women could get treatment in the hospitals and clinics amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Advocate Md Tanveer said the High Court ordered the hospitals and clinics, which are testing the samples of Covid-19 virus, to give priority to the pregnant women.
Mr Tanveer on May 24 this year sent a legal notice to the bodies concerned of the government to ensure proper treatment of the pregnant women.
Later he filed the writ petition on Sunday as the respondents didn't comply with the notice.
Health secretary, women and children affairs secretary, director general of directorate general of health services, director general of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), registrar of Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council and director of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) have been made respondents in the writ petition.
The writ petition said, on May 26, a pregnant woman had been refused to give any kind of treatment when she went to Sadullapur upazila health complex of Gaibandha district.
