Dist admin takes initiative to rehabilitate beggars in Gaibandha

Speakers in Gaibandha underscored proper implementation of programmes to make the district beggar free through active participation of all.

An initiative has been taken by the district administration to rehabilitee beggars.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, took a programme last year aiming to make the country free from beggars by 2018.
As per the programme, various strategies had been taken by the district administration to rehabilitee beggars by creating work opportunities for them in the district, said MM Ashik Reza, Nezarat Deputy Collector.

He said about 6,878 beggars of seven upazilas in the district will be rehabilitated in the society depending on their desirable and capable income-generating activities.

On Sunday last, deputy commissioner of the district Gautam Chandra Pal presented a beggars' rehabilitation plan to the district level officials at the monthly meeting of district development coordination committee (DDCC) held at the conference room of deputy commissioner’s office.

He urged the district level officials to donate their one day salary to make the beggars’ rehabilitation initiative a success.

BSS said Gautam also called upon the well-off and solvent section of the society to come forward with the positive attitude to end this.
Terming the begging one of the social problems in the country, the officials assured of giving their one day salary to eliminate the begging from the district through rehabilitation of beggars.

Local superintendent of police Mashrukur Rahman Khaled, civil surgeon Dr Abdus Shakur, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension AKM Ruhul Amin, executive engineer of the Public Works .

Department M Arifuzzaman, upazila chairmen, UNOs, and public officials and local journalists were present at the meeting with additional deputy commissioner Rokhsana Begum in the chair.
